Jonny Rice is a recent graduate from the Art Institute of Los Angeles where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Video Game Art and Design. Jonny quickly found his niche as a level designer and concept artist using the Unreal engine.
As an undergraduate, Jonny received academic honors and was awarded “Best of Quarter” for Game Design and Fourth Quarter Review. Jonny also participated in the Art Institute's student production company Game Wizards, where he assumed the roles of Concept Artist, World Builder and Game Designer.
In Game Wizards Jonny worked as a Concept Artist onBoiler Plate, an Unreal Mod, which took second place in the “Make Something Unreal Contest”. He also made great contributions as a World Builder to StarFall, a single player Unreal Mod. During his last quarter at the Art Institute he pitched an idea for a game called RockBots; a game about giant musical robots that battle for genre supremacy in an urban world where music has been outlawed by the M.A.N. The game was selected by his peers for development and eventual distribution. Assuming the role of Game Designer and leading a team of twenty-two students Jonny and his talented team began the process of making RockBots a reality. They are hopeful that RockBots will be considered by the Independent Game Festival in 2010. The game is still in production …check back for updates.
Prior to pursuing his degree at the Art Institute, Jonny worked at LucasArts for five years as a Quality Assurance Tester. While at LucasArts Jonny participated in the development of 13 games and took on responsibilities beyond his role as a tester to build his skills in script writing, public relations and marketing. Jonny represented and promoted LucasArts’ upcoming games at various industry conventions including E3, Comicon, Digital Life, andGencon. He was also selected, multiple times, to test off site and help steer games through their final stages of submission at Totally Games, Pandemic, andFrontier Developments.
Jonny’s love for videos games matches his enthusiasm and passion for creating them. His background in QA and Game Design give him a unique perspective on what it takes to see a game from concept to player experience. He knows video games cannot be made by one person but rather talented and dedicated teams working toward a shared vision.
